Liquid CO2 pump, model 1951 CO2 Pump, liquid carbon dioxide pump, high vapor liquid pump
Pumping Liquid CO2
1951 Plunger Pump

The Model 1951 Plunger Pump has been introduced specifically to pump liquid carbon dioxide and other special high vapor pressure liquids. With the increasing acceptance for the use of carbon dioxide in industrial applications, this pump was developed to lower operating costs, enable less frequent maintenance and eliminate the need for extra cooling or an additional booster pump. The Model 1951 is designed for refrigeration applications such as cold-storage and freeze drying, as well as, applications as diverse as furniture foam production and manufacture of essential oils and hop extracts.

Benefits of CO2

Liquid carbon dioxide has a number of benefits as a refrigerant. Liquid CO2 has a high thermal capacity, so it can remove a lot of heat. It is very safe, compared to ammonia and HFC & HCFC refrigerants and it is environmentally friendly, since carbon dioxide from the atmosphere is used and no additional gas is generated.

Benefits of the Model 1951 design

The Model 1951 pump has a small unswept volume. This means that only a small quantity of liquid carbon dioxide is compressed during the pumping cycle and therefore less energy is added to the liquid stream. This pump not only handles high vapor liquids that require high inlet pressure, but can also accept a high inlet pressure. This means that liquid CO2 can feed directly from the storage tank and can even be pumped close to ambient temperature eliminating expensive chillers or large pressurized tanks.

The large top-inlet arrangement is completely smooth to eliminate any regions that could trap vapor. Any entrained gas bubbles rise to the top and can be vented back to the source. The pump cylinders receive only liquid CO2 and not a gas-liquid mixture. The pump can therefore operate closer to the liquid/vapor transition and extra sub-cooling may not be required.
  • the pumped liquid is not unnecessarily heated
  • the energy consumption is minimized
  • the pump can run slower at a given flow rate
  • the length of time between service is increased
The Model 1951 head is manufactured from UNS 31603 stainless steel for liquid and process compatibility, strength and corrosion resistance. The concentric, high density, polished ceramic plungers are abrasion resistant and provide excellent seal life. The plunger seals are lubricated by the liquid carbon dioxide with no need for additional seal flushing liquids.
