What is DI Water?
DI water is purified water with the ions and dissolved solids such as calcium, sodium, chlorides removed by an ion-exchange process. Positively charged ions (cations) and negatively charged ions (anions) are exchanged for hydrogen (H+) and hydroxyl (OH-) ions leaving hydrogen or hydroxyl ions in their place. Today, deionized (Dl) water has become an essential component in applications including: medical, laboratory, pharmaceutical, cosmetics, electronics, nuclear, manufacturing, food processing, plating, various industrial processes and even the final rinse at some car washes to provide a spot free rinse. DI water quality can vary from one system to another and temperature also has a significant impact. It is critical in some Dl water applications, such as gas turbine cooling, to know the precise quality to avoid damage to the equipment. Deionized pure water is a poor electrical conductor, however, because of its ion structure, has a low lubricity level and tends to leach material from contact metals. It is important to consider including special flushing options in pumping systems to provide added lubrication for extended seal life.
