A VFD-variable frequency drive electronically controls
the power delivered to the motor to adjust the motor speed and, thereby, the pump speed [RPM] and
resulting pump output [GPM]. The VFD controlled
pumping system improves the efficiency of the motor provides better process control and reduces
maintenance costs. Benefits of using a VFD include:
- soft start eliminates high start torque and shock
loads and incrementally increases frequency and
motor speed up to operating speed
- reduces energy consumption by as much as 50%
by running motors periodically at less than 100%
- offers flexibility with either 50Hz or 60Hz
- provides motor over current protection
- provides flexibility in phasing equipment in and out
to match demand or multiple operating stations
- extends system life by operating only as required
- provides information gathering for system
monitoring for improved maintenance and lower
operating costs
- supports green technology by reducing energy consumption
The VFD –variable frequency drive typically works
with most quality 3 phase motors and from 110-690
Volts. The initial cost of a VFD controlled pumping
system can be higher than a traditional motor
installation, however, the payback period can be as little
as 12-36 months depending on factors like local energy
cost, degree of integrated feedback through a PLC or
total saved energy running at reduced capacity.
With proper selection and installation, the return on your
investment over the life cycle with the VFD controlled
pumping system will be greater than a standard motor
or other flow control devices.
We look forward to working with you on your next
VFD controlled pumping system.
