This process is used when an oilfield's reservoir pressure has been depleted and is no longer sufficient to aid in the pumping process. Water is injected into the well to maintain reservoir pressure and push oil toward the production well. Secondary recovery includes wastewater re-injection, low salinity flooding, and can use any source of bulk water available.
Wastewater re-injection is a standard method for secondary recovery. Oil wells bring up large amounts of saltwater when the oil is being pumped, rendering "produced water," the majority of which consists of salt or brackish water (also called oilfield brine). After the oil and brine have been separated, saltwater is injected back into the oil reservoir. This method allows for wastewater disposal while increasing pressure in the reservoir and helping oil flow toward the production well.
